Fitting childrens shoes

One of the first things new parents learn is how quickly their children grow. Clothes seem to last no time at all before you have to go out and buy the next size. At least with a second child you tend to have boxes of clothes ready for them to grow into, but does the same apply to children’s shoes?

Shoes for kids aren’t a cheap commodity, so you can understand why parents try to make them last as long as possible and get a bargain. Particularly in the early years of walking, shoes need to be tough, as scuffs and collisions with kerb stones, tarmac and the like are inevitable parts a shoe’s life. Some parents keep the shoes alongside the ‘hand me down’ clothing without giving a great deal of thought to the disadvantages, completely oblivious to the damage they might cause their second child’s feet.

When you buy children’s shoes, it’s not just about the length of feet, but the width too. Even then some shoes fit better than others, and we’re all familiar with walking up and down the shoe shop to assess the quality of the fit. Shoes from a big brother of sister might not benefit from the same fitting care, so it’s very easy to forget this process with your second and subsequent children, and this can do long term damage to their feet in extreme cases.

Of course, not every child benefiting from an older sibling’s shoes is at risk, as some children follow the same growth pattern as an older brother or sister. The best advice is for parents to make a mental note of the sizes of shoes put aside when the first child grew out of them, and take the younger siblings for their feet measuring. If the sizes match, great, otherwise it’s time to get out the credit card for some new children’s shoes. After all, it’s an investment in a healthy future!

Childrens school shoes

Childrens shoes are, of course, one of those September things ! With the start to the new school year all mums and dads want their kids looking their best with a nice and shiny new pair of kid’s school shoes.

I went out this year and bought blackNike trainers as my children’s school shoes and boy was I sorry !!

It seems that the school’s policy on childrens shoes for school is that they are ALL black – 100% black – not even the smallest of Nike ticks on the side.

My kids got sent home first day !! Ouch !!

Of course – I rang the school and moaned and complained about their policy on children’s shoes but it did not get me anywhere – it seems that school uniform and school shoes are closely linked to discipline ? I think it is a control thing !!

Anyway – here is some advice for when you go out and buy childrens shoes :

Just printout this childrens shoes size guide and put your kids feet on it.

Kids shoes discounts

When it comes to shopping for childrens shoes one of the first things to consider is discounts. In terms of kids shoe shops the best time for these seems to be at the end of summer / winter seasons although for children’s school shoes mid September is a good choice.

But are the discounts on offer always such a good deal ?

I am coming to the conclusion that a reliable choice is the big name brands such as Tescos :

I mean – they have the buying power to buy shoes at rock bottom prices and pass the savings on to you. The next pair of children’s shoes I buy will be from Tescos and I will post here my thoughts on them.

Childrens shoes for the beach

Kids love the beach but not all childrens shoes are suitable. The most obvious choice for childrens shoes on the beach must be Crocs !

  • lightweight
  • nearly indestructable
  • they float
  • water and sand falls out of them easily

So all in all they are a great shoe for your children on the beach but if you are an eco warrior you might blanche at the thought of a petroleum product like this !

See http://www.jellyegg.com/ for a massive range of kids cros shoes !

Another option for kids beach shoes in the form of fivefingers can be found here (but a bit pricey):

Warning over ill fitting children’s shoes

A headeacher in Liverpool has put her foot down about poor quality and ill fitting childrens shoes.plastic shoes Carol Machell – headteacher of Broadgreen Primary has written to all parents in an effort to encourage them to buy sensible footwear. The move comes after a young girl who was wearing non supportive shoes fell in the playground and broke her leg.

The advice makes sense but with tight budgets it is not known if parents will act on the advice.

Feet and shoe care

Caring for children’s feet is an important role for any parent. Here are some tips to help you out :

  • Make sure that the shoes you buy for your child fit – their toes should not be scrunched up in the end and nor should their feet move around freely – this will cause blisters. For a 6 year old child you should just about be able to put your finger in the heel of the shoe. For trainers the same rule applies.
  • Check toe nails on a regular basis and cut them straight to avoid ingrowing nails.
  • But shoes that are supportive – high heels should definitely be avoided!
  • Be careful with hand me downs – if you have had shoes fitted especially for one child it does not mean they will fit the foot shape of the next one up.
  • Use cotton socks which help absorb moisture and make sure they are pulled on properly with the heel in the right place before fitting the shoe.
  • Using polish helps keep the shoe leather soft so try and use polish on a regular basis.
  • Never let your child wear wet shoes – this is a sure way to cause sores and blisters.

Slippers or barefoot

Slippers are a traditional gift for kids and help keep feet warm and toasty through the winter – but are they good for childrens foot development ?

Whilst slippers do not offer the support of shoes they do offer a level of protection from stubbed childrens toes and sharp objects (eg small stones or unnoticed bits of broken glass) that may be in the home environment so they are a choice I have always encouraged. However – care should be taken to ensure that they offer room to breathe as it is important that children’s feet are given a chance to air at some point during the day.

I suspect that they are a necessity in many households – mums hate children wearing their muddy shoes in the house and the bare feet on the cold floor is not appreciated by most kids. A word of caution – many slippers do not mix with wet kitchen floors.

Boots and ankle support

If you are the outdoors type then you may consider purchasing boots for your children. This is a good idea if you are going to be covering rough ground as they offer invaluable support to the ankles and prevent twisting. Boots should be laced cross style and should be tight enough to offer support yet still allow blood flow and proper circulation. Try and choose lightweight boots as heavy ones can make walking a real slog for a young one.

Fitting shoes

It is essential that shoes fit properly for children – especially younger children, this is because incorrectly fitting footwear can be detrimental to the development of a child’s foot. Before any fitting it is important to have your child’s shoe size measured by an expert – of particular note should be the length, width and also the height of the arch as some form of internal support may be necessary.

Young children’s bones are still developing and can take the shape of a badly fitted shoe and this can cause long term issues so please do take the time to make sure you get this right.

Clarks range

Taking a look at the new Clarks range I can see a common theme – quality, in design and materials. Clarks has always been a sound choice for children’s shoes and this year is no different. Their use of fine leather and attractive colours is complementary to the high design quality expected from this manufacturer. For any parent concerned about the development of their offspring’s feet then Clarks is a sound choice time and time again.

Tying laces

One simple obstacle on the path of childrens life is tying laces. I was horrified when I found out that my son, aged 8 was unable to do so – the reason was simple – instead of having laces all of his shoes have velcro straps and so he has had no practice. So we sat down for an afternoon and went over it a few times. He really did gain a sense of pride from tying his own laces and I wish I had done it years ago.
